So I updated my iPod Touch to firmware 3.1.1…

Kenneth Hynek28th Sep 2009The Sciences, Mobile Communications, , , , , , , , ,

…and about a day later regretted the decision. There wasn’t much to recommend the new firmware, and I missed the conveniences afforded me by the various tweaks that I’d been able to install on the thing by jailbreaking it.

So, like a fool, I figured that I could just restore it to the 3.0 firmware (which I could then jailbreak again) by using iTunes and my still-saved copy of the 3.0 firmware.

Big oops. The result was a crashed iPod. Now, granted, the crashed iPod was not a bricked iPod; it could be restored with the 3.1.1 firmware. But that wasn’t what I wanted; I wanted the 3.0 firmware. But at least by vanilla means, it appeared that there was no way to make that step backward.

Which is not to say that there is no way of doing it, mind. There is a way to downgrade, but it’s a bit convoluted. Fortunately, a certain Game2Freak prepared a relatively easy-to-follow guide to the process:

  1. Download QuickFreedom software. (I used QuickFreedom 1.2 BETA)
  2. Download iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a_Restore Firmware and 3.0
  3. Open Quick Freedom and do as followes:
    1. Install Libusb
    2. Browse for 2.1.1 Firmware
    3. Hit Next
    4. Uncheck Install Installer
    5. Hit Next [Don't tell the program to create custom firmware -- Ken]
    6. Hit DFU Instructions and follow steps (It might take a few tries to put ipod into DFU mode. It should be just a black screen. If you have itunes on it, it is not in DFU mode.)
  4. When prompted hold shift and click restore in itunes – I used itunes 8.2.1.6 [it also works with the latest version as of this posting date -- Ken]
  5. Select your downloaded 2.1.1 Firmware
  6. Wait for ipod to restart after firmware install
  7. Hold shift and click restore in itunes
  8. Select the 3.0 firmware
  9. Re-Jailbreak with Redsn0w, if you choose to do so

I’m just in the process of restoring the 3.0 firmware onto the iPod (step 8, basically), but things are running along just nicely. And I have a recent backup of all my songs, photos, and applications, so there’s no worries there. Settings and everything else should restore easily enough.

But yes…there’s the process. Let me add a note of thanks to Game2Freak (whoever he may be) for posting the above; it was almost a life-saver.

Also: please note, good reader, that the above only applies to a 2nd generation iPod Touch; other iPod models may also be salvageable by this means, but probably not with the same firmware files. Firmwares for other iPod (and, presumably, iPhone) models can probably be found by means of Google or Bing.
