Rape is no excuse for abortion
In debates about abortion, the topic of rape often comes up. “What about in cases of rape?” the pro-choicer will ask. “Is it not cruel to force a woman to have a child that will be a constant reminder of the assault she suffered?”
My response has been an unequivocal “no!” for as long as I can remember. And there are five reasons why:
- Typically, the “rape question” is a distraction, and a fishing expedition also. In my experience, it is typically asked when other lines of pro-abortion argument fail or are refuted, and it is asked with a specific hidden intention in mind. In the spirit of mice and cookies, the inquiring pro-choicer is looking for an “in” — if a pro-lifer can be made to concede on a specific point, his every argument can be summarily rejected.
- The circumstances of conception are irrelevant, as they do not strip the unborn child of her humanity and intrinsic human dignity. As such, the argument is not an appeal to reason; it is an attempt at rank emotional manipulation by means of invoking something truly ugly: rape.
- Proceeding from the previous point, the child of rape is not guilty of the crime of rape, or of any crime. It would be a profound injustice to take an innocent life under any circumstance…why should a baby have to die because of a coward’s crime?
It isn’t actually cruel to ask this. That’s not to day that raising a child of rape will be easy…but it is not cruel to say that the child should be born.
In service and support of the last point, I offer this example. This woman was minutes away from aborting a child conceived in rape, but was gifted with “a rush of love from God” at the last moment.
Her story is interesting in it’s detail. She makes no bones about the fact that she found it difficult to bond with her kid because of the resemblance to her attacker…but in the end, she was able to look past that and see in her child a human being with a right to be loved.
