This just seems like overkill on SanDisk’s part
Don’t get me wrong: I shoot a lot of photos at times, and there have been occasions where 6.5 GB of memory (the rough sum total storage available on my various Compact Flash cards) has been…not quite enough. In fact, there have been two such times: my trip to Britain and my and Grace’s honeymoon in Greece.
The astute reader may note that in both cases, the problem had less to do with the fact that nearly 7 GB of memory was not enough for trips of some duration; the main issue was being thousands of miles from my computer, and thus from a place to which images could be downloaded.
Granted, more available memory would have mitigated the problem in both cases. Even so…the thought of a 64 GB Compact Flash card seems just a little bit silly to me, especially since CF is a somewhat dated technology that is losing more and more ground to SD with each generation of cameras…even amongst SLRs.
I guess there’s still enough of a market there that SanDisk sees value in pushing new product into it. And i should add that the new cards do boast impressive data transfer rates (a key consideration for RAW shooters like me). Even so, these cards will probably be little more than anachronisms in a couple of years.
