Obama’s speech was so good, apparently, that Chris Matthews forgot Obama was black…
…and yes, I do in fact wish I was making that headline up:
“You know I was trying to think about who he was tonight and it’s interesting…he is post-racial by all appearances. You know I forgot he was black tonight for an hour. You know he’s gone a long way to become a leader in this country and passed so much history in just a year or two. I mean it’s something we don’t even think about. But I was watching him and said “Wait a minute, he’s an African American guy in front of a bunch of white people and there he is President of the United States and we’ve completely forgotten that tonight.” Completely forgotten it.”
Make of it what you will, good reader. About all I can think to say is that when someone like me, someone who admits to standing in opposition to much of what Barack Obama stands for and believes in, criticizes Obama’s policies, odds are high that I will be branded a racist for even having the temerity to question what “the Messiah” is doing.
But Chris Matthews, being an Obama booster, can apparently get away with saying stuff like the above. If he receives anything, it’ll be a slap on the wrist. A tap, really. A light peck. He might have to issue a cursory apology on the next episode of Hardball.
Can you imagine the uproar if someone like Rush Limbaugh had been the one to utter the above brain-fart? The kids at Media Matters would have had a field day…and rightly so.
But Matthews will get a pass on this one. That’s what a leg tingle buys you, I suppose.
