Getting too good at this travel thing
In general, I don’t expect to get from the front doors of the airport, past the airline counter, through customs and security, and into the international departures lounge at the airport in twenty minutes flat.
But then, I also don’t expect it’ll ever happen again; breezing through all the checkpoints at the airport is a game of luck more than anything else.
Not that I didn’t try to help things along. I opted for self check-in this time around, rather than “at the counter” check-in. And I packed a bit more intelligently, so that I had fewer digital devices to present to security (and what devices I did have to present were more easily accessible than on previous trips). And I came with empty pockets. You’d be surprised what a time-waster fiddling with keys and wallets can be.
And it helped that lines were either short (customs, security) or non-existent (the Delta counter). All in all, not a bad way to start the latest excursion to the the great state of Wyoming.
It was a bit unusual to be sitting in the departure lounge during daylight hours; I’m used to early-morning departures. The flight to Salt Lake City — Delta flight 4553 — typically leaves at about 7:45 AM. Indeed, the lady at the customs desk almost told me that I had missed the flight, until she noticed that there was a second DL 4553 flight on this particular Sunday..which she thought was quite odd. But there was indeed an afternoon flight today, as evidenced by the fact that I’m posting this from the Salt Lake City airport.
Which beings me to my one gripe with the Edmonton International Airport: wi-fi. Everywhere else I’ve been (in terms of airports, that is), wi-fi has been free. Here in Salt Lake, it’s even pretty speedy! But in Edmonton? Hah! You pay for it, and then through the nose. $9.95 for a day’s worth of Internet access? It is to laugh.
I wonder if people actually use the service? They must, or else why would Boingo still be offering it…but still. Such a rip-off.
But hey, at least it’s free here in Salt Lake!
And to be fair, it’s a pretty familiar trip from here. The car, the supply stops, the drive…I’ve done ‘em all before, and could probably do ‘em half asleep. Even the flight was familiar; I recognized most of the flight crew. It’s business as usual in what’s become the usual place. Only for longer…much longer.
Shit.
Anyhow, if you’ll excuse me, I have some articles and other research material to download!
