Vilkommen auf zee Age of Obama
It’s Inauguration Day in the U.S., and that’s all I really have to say about it. George W. Bush leaves office, Barack Obama takes office, and things continue. I don’t look on this as being the end of the world, or the end of America “as we know it,” but equally, I’m not happy about it.
So I’m just going to ignore it, and let the rest of the blogosphere say what needs to be said. For my own, I hope Obama doesn’t screw up too badly in office, I pray that FOCA doesn’t become the law of the land, and I hope that all the various predictions about Obama being “tested” shortly after taking office somehow fail to come true.
And if not, well…I hope Obama weathers the test.
Anyhow, to the blogs (and whatnot). I’ve been noticing a number of “fare thee wells” to Bush:
- Kathryn Jean Lopez at the Corner links to a big sendoff from a number of pundits and commentators.
- Peter Wehner lists “all the things people should thank Bush for,” starting with his 2000 defeat of Al Gore.
- The Anchoress offers a fitting tune for the President’s departure, and aggregates a bunch of other links to additional farewells.
- And of course, how could I not mention David Warren’s excellent sendoff piece?
Meanwhile, much more coverage is being given over to the inauguration itself:
- Vox Day notes that students in some schools will be strictly monitored to make sure that nobody expresses a dissenting opinion about “the President-Elect.”
- Captain Capitalism notes, again, the inherent folly in Obama’s promise to “create jobs.”
- The Deeps of Time provides a timely video for reflection, especially considering Obama’s pro-abortion “cred.”
- Rachel Lucas is mad as hell at the Russians, who apparently think that Americans are “more enlightened now.” Yeah, sure…don’t be pulling that Canadian flag off your luggage just yet, Yanks.
- Jonah Goldberg notes that the creepy and incessant fawning over Obama is…well…creepy and incessant.
- Hugo Chavez welcomes Obama to office by claiming that he has the “same stench” as did George Bush. Nice to know that Obama is coming into the house on good terms with Venezuela.
- Catholic apologist Steve Ray links to two letters to Obama from prominent Catholics. Worth a read, and reflection.
- Jay Currie adds his own reflections on “The One,” but ends by wishing Obama well in his time in office.
- Ace notes that various celebrities who had previously lambasted America and its people, during the Bush years are now getting all chummy-chummy and “We’re all in this together,” on the eve of Obama’s taking power. Hypocrites? In Hollywood? Surely, Ace, you jest?
- The Raving Theist, meanwhile, tells us how he really feels.
The site to watch, however, is Right Wing News, at which Melissa Clouthier is live-blogging the day’s news coverage. Ann Althouse will also be live-blogging the event.
And already, there’s something worth noting (and which serves as a good end-point) in what Melissa has written:
Here come President Barack Obama and former President George W. Bush. We are lucky, people, to live in a country that transfers power to gracefully. This is not the norm in most parts of the world.
Just so. For all we might disagree with one man or the other, they walk out into view of the cameras together, shake hands, and say a few words. Just like that, rule of the United States is handed over from one to the next. No shots fired, no tanks in the streets, no riots.
Would that many other places in the world could be a tenth as fortunate.
