Pic of the Day #854
There’s a photographic technique out there called “tilt shift miniature faking” which, despite its fancy name, is actually a fairly simple concept: use a lens that focuses on only a small area of the frame and some photo-editing to adjust things like saturation and contrast to try and turn a photograph of a real-life scene into what appears to be a photograph of a model.
I don’t quite know if I hit the mark with this shot, but between the Lensbaby and Lightroom I gave it an honest attempt. Comments on this one would be appreciated, if in fact you — good reader — have any experience judging the merits of such things as this.

Don’t have experience Kenneth but I can say it looks very interesting. It took me back to my Matchbox collection if that helps :)
I went to the Lensbaby site and there seem to be a variety of lens/optics. Can I ask what you’re using and overall price?
I’ve got a Canon 30D and would consider it based on what you’ve done. Oh I wanted to see some of your other Lensbaby shots but they don’t appear in the older posts.
Thanks Kenneth, I ventured over here from Vox’s site.
Hey, I’ll take that assessment; Matchbox is an ideal benchmark for this sort of shot, methinks!
So thanks for that!
As it is, I use a Lensbaby 3G – this little critter. It is, I think, their most expensive lens, and retails for somewhere in the area of $350. That’s in CAD, so YMMV.
Anyhow, welcome to a fellow Vox reader. And if you want to see more of my Lensbaby work, I’ve got quite a few samples on Flickr. (I just converted my image-handling scheme over, and haven’t updated some of the older posts yet.)

[...] Another attempt at tilt shift miniature faking. I think I got a bit carried away with the saturation, admittedly, but I also think I got the "plastic" feel a bit better in this shot than in my previous attempt. [...]
