I’m busy today

This is, first and foremost, a note to say that I’ve got a lot on my plate today, not the least of which includes converting how I’m handling the site’s image posting features. I realized, in doing some thinking on that which has been by far my biggest time-sink since the domain switchover, that I’ve been going about storing and displaying images all wrong.

To this point, I’ve been storing pictures locally and organizing galleries here. There’s certain advantages to that, I realize…but at the same time, they aren’t really advantages. I don’t run off of my own personal server, so it’s not like I’m creating a viable backup of my photos; I can’t just walk downstairs and pull the hard drive out if I need to restore something to its proper place. And if I ever have to do a site changeover, I’ve got to upload multiple gigabytes of photos again, and again, and again.

There’s also the matter of duplication: I upload one set of photos for this site, another for the family site…and possibly more as well, above and beyond that. Wouldn’t it be easier to just upload a photo once, to a central location, and pull it out as needed on each site that would benefit from drawing on it?

I think so, which is why I’m now going to be handling everything through Flickr. All my images will be uploaded there, and pulled onto the blog here when I need them. And my and ’s site will draw on the same account, to serve up images there. As an added bonus, I can upload to Flickr directly out of , which saves me considerable time in a day. To say nothing of the fact that putting my pictures onto a site like Flickr will do wonders for getting me a bit more exposure. Not that I’m a stellar photographer, by any stretch…but I think I’ve got something to offer, all the same.

So for the next little while, I’ll be busy with the changeover to the new image-handling scheme. Posting will be fairly light in the interim, although I will be putting up a “quick takes” article in a bit here to comment, briefly, on a few stories I noticed today.

Oh, and for the curious: my Flickr account is here.
