CBC funding to be cut?
“FRIENDS has learned from a reliable and confidential source of plans by the Harper Conservative party to slash a devastating 200 million dollars from the Parliamentary grant of the CBC. This would be a crippling and potentially fatal blow to the radio and television operations of an already weakened National Public broadcaster…”
I think that Hockey Night in Canada could probably remain viable if it had to go private. That’s about all there is on CBC that’s really worth watching on any kind of consistent basis.
As to the rest? Well, let’s just say I wouldn’t be sad to see the CBC go. I really, really wouldn’t.

Well, the CTV group is looking rather fondly at HNIC – they already snapped up the theme song and one of its better younger commentators (Cuthbert). That TSN would provide most of the staff but, if necessary, CTV could broadcast HNIC to much the same degree as CBC does, that should alleviate regulatory concerns.
Also, CFL is now all CTV and the Olympics are also CTV. I am sure if CBC folded there would be a willing private broadcaster.
But then we would mis all the ‘Canadian content’ and ‘alternative sources’ for news and television.
But maybe, in the end, the CBC should, with the ‘drastic cuts’ (which will affect many local stations), get out of the ‘private sphere’ and work at being Canada’s PBS/NPR and survive mostly off of public fundraising, not tax dollars or corporate ad money.
No, no, couldn’t have that…that might make it *better* or something.
