Harper opts for the stall tactic
Suspending Parliament is probably his best option for the time being. It will give the Conservative Party of Canada time to regroup, and may even give the coalition — which depends on the good graces and convenience of the Bloc Quebecois — time to fracture and fail.
Of course, this all depends on Governor General Michaelle Jean accepting and granting Stephen Harper’s request for a prorogation of Parliament, which she might not do.
I guess we’ll see what happens. Harper will meet with Michaelle Jean on Thursday, and will address the nation today, apparently. Come next Monday, we will either see Prime Minister Stephane Dion swept into power, and all the attendant hell that such a move will unleash…or we will see Parliament close its doors until the end of January.
