One could have guessed that the Mumbai terrorists were Islamic
But it’s still nice to have confirmation of the fact.
The attacks were claimed by a previously unknown group, the Deccan Mujahedeen, which demanded the release of all Mujahideen, or Islamic holy warriors, in Indian jails. The co-ordinated attacks bore the hallmarks of Al Qaeda, but there was no sign of any formal link with the terror network.
One militant inside the Oberoi-Trident, identifying himself only as Sahadullah, told an Indian television station by telephone: “Release all the mujahideens, and Muslims living in India should not be troubled.”
I keep looking for news stories in which other religious groups are reported as committing acts of terror on this sort of scale. I usually come up dry.
This is a particularly bad attack, in which over 100 people have already been killed. And it’s hit home for some Canadians as well, who are today mourning the death of loved ones at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay. Let us pray, good reader, that in God’s love they might find consolation and strength, and that those still held hostage by the terrorists might not come to further harm.
I fear, however, that the resolution of this already bloody situation will be bloodier still.
