Pic of the Day #374

Kenneth Hynek29th Sep 2007Photography, Pic of the Day

Well, that was a fun little excursion into other peoples’ photographic work. I’m still a bit staggered by it all: was it really a year ago that I began posting these pictures? It seems so. Wow, time does fly.

This is, predictably, another image from the Jamboree (hey, when you take over 1,700 photos of something, one or two might be decent), and in particular it’s a panoramic I took of the crowd of people who gathered for the Catholic Mass on August 1st. I’m posting it because for a crowd shot, it’s rather unique: there is a marked lack of stitching errors to be found in it.

Oh, I’m sure they exist. I just can’t recall finding any…but then, the full-size image does have something like 20 million pixels in it, and I really don’t have time to investigate each one personally.

Edit-wise, I had a fair bit to do with this shot. Obviously, there was the stitching part, as well as a lot of fringe reduction on the trees and some of the people in the foreground. More to the point, just given the angle of the Sun, I had to do a lot of highlight recovery in order to only have a third of the sky appear blown-out. I adjusted the colours a bit as well, to better bring out the blues and greens in the environment.

That said, though, I really like this shot. It’s not like those pictures you see of protests in the newspapers these days, where the photographer has gotten really close-in to hide the fact that there were only a hundred or so people actually waving signs. This is pretty much the full view, and the fact that over a thousand people turned up to hear Mass is easily visible.
